Stand Up to Work Out

FORGET sit-ups and crunches performed on an exercise mat on the floor. According to Dixie Stanforth, a researcher in kinesiology and sports science at the University of Texas, the best way to carry out core-strengthening exercises is standing up. In findings presented at the American College of Sports Medicine’s annual summit, Stanforth explained that ‘vertical’ core exercises, such as lunges performed in all directions, are more effective because “they move the body through multiple planes (forward, backward and side-to-side) and train the core (muscles in the abdomen and back) in the way it is most often used - standing”.
