A Kranking Good Idea?

KRANKING - or cycling for the arms only - is set to be one of the hit workouts of 2010. Devised by the American trainer Johnny Goldberg, the man who invented indoor spinning, it is performed on a Krankcycle, a stationary “arm bike” that has a seat, suspended front wheels and hand-pedals where the handlebars should be. It is operated by turning two rotating handles (called the krankarms) separately or together while your legs remain still as you half-stand, half-sit on the equipment. Resistance can be increased as you get fitter and it is harder work than it seems. Muscles in the arms, shoulders, chest and back are fully engaged and the core muscles work hard to stabilise the body which sounds great news for anyone looking to improve upper body strength. But does it work? A study commissioned by the American Council on Exercise that was carried out at the University of Wisconsin found that up to 269 calories can be burned in a 30-minute Kranking workout and develops excellent upper body endurance. Time to get pedaling with your arms…
